Spring Pond Startup Guide

Spring is the most critical — and most dangerous — time of year for koi. Water temperatures rise, fish immune systems are slow to reactivate, and opportunistic pathogens are already multiplying. A structured startup protocol sets the foundation for a healthy season.

Before You Begin

Do not start treatments until water temperature consistently holds above 50°F. Beneficial bacteria are ineffective in cold water, and premature intervention can do more harm than good. Use a reliable pond thermometer and check temps at the same time each day for at least three consecutive days before proceeding.

Week 1: Assess and Clean

- Remove netting, debris, and any dead plant material from the pond and skimmer baskets

- Inspect your pump, filter media, UV clarifier bulb, and all plumbing connections

- Perform a 10–15% water change using dechlorinated water

- Test your water parameters: ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, and KH. Write them down — you will want a baseline to track progress

- Do not feed your fish yet if temperatures are below 55°F

Week 2: Establish Biology

- Apply KoiGuard Pond Beneficial Bacteria at the Day 1 loading dose (8 fl oz per 1,000 gallons for liquid; 4 scoops per 1,000 gallons for dry)

- Turn off your UV sterilizer for 24 hours to allow bacteria to colonize

- If sludge is visible on the bottom, also apply KoiGuard Pond Enzymes at the Day 1 dose to begin breaking it down

- Begin feeding lightly with a wheat germ or low-protein food if temps are 55–60°F

Week 3: Monitor and Maintain

- Switch to weekly maintenance doses of Beneficial Bacteria (4 fl oz per 1,000 gallons) and Enzymes (4 fl oz per 1,000 gallons)

- Alternatively, use KoiGuard BeneZyme as a single weekly treatment for combined coverage

- Test water parameters again. Ammonia and nitrite should be dropping. If either is elevated, perform a 10% water change and continue dosing

- Gradually increase feeding frequency as temperatures stabilize above 60°F

Week 4 (and Beyond!): Settle Into a Routine

- Continue weekly KoiGuard treatments throughout the season

- Turn your UV sterilizer back on (replace the bulb annually for best performance)

- Transition to regular koi food once temps hold above 65°F

- Test water parameters weekly through spring, then biweekly once the pond is stable

Common Spring Mistakes

- Feeding too early or too much before the biofilter is active

- Skipping the loading dose — the Day 1 dose is higher for a reason

- Leaving UV on during bacterial treatments, which kills the beneficial organisms you just added

- Performing a massive water change that shocks the system — keep changes to 10–15% at a time

The Bottom Line

Spring startup is not complicated, but it does require patience and consistency. A few weeks of disciplined treatment with KoiGuard Pond Beneficial Bacteria and Enzymes will establish the biological foundation that keeps your water clear and your koi healthy all season long.
