How to Calculate Your Pond Volume
Kelly CookeAccurate pond volume is the foundation of proper water treatment. Every KoiGuard product is dosed based on gallons, so knowing your exact volume ensures your fish get the protection they need — no more, no less.
Rectangular Ponds
Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Average Depth (ft) × 7.48 = Gallons
Example: A pond that is 10 ft long, 6 ft wide, and 3 ft deep:
10 × 6 × 3 × 7.48 = 1,346 gallons
Circular Ponds
Radius (ft) × Radius (ft) × 3.14 × Average Depth (ft) × 7.48 = Gallons
Example: A round pond with a 5 ft radius and 2.5 ft depth:
5 × 5 × 3.14 × 2.5 × 7.48 = 1,467 gallons
Irregular or Kidney-Shaped Ponds
For irregular shapes, divide your pond into rough sections (rectangles and circles), calculate each section separately, and add them together. When in doubt, estimate conservatively — it is always safer to slightly underdose than overdose.
Pro Tips
- Measure average depth, not maximum depth. Most ponds have shelves and slopes that reduce total volume significantly.
- If your pond has a bottom drain and external plumbing, add approximately 5–10% to account for water in the lines and filter chambers.
- Recheck your volume any time you add rocks, gravel, or modify the pond structure. Displacement from hardscape can reduce actual water volume by 10–20%.
Why Volume Matters for Treatment
KoiGuard products are formulated with precise concentrations of active ingredients. Under-dosing reduces effectiveness. Overdosing wastes product and can stress your biological filtration. Take 10 minutes to measure your pond correctly — your koi will thank you.
